This case study covers a CNC machined 6061-T6 aluminum gearbox housing for a medical syringe pump. The housing locates bearings, supports the lead screw path and provides the motor mounting interface, so small geometric errors can affect drive noise, friction and dose repeatability.

Application Background
The part included coaxial bearing bores, a lead screw support pocket, threaded mounting holes, dowel references, cover faces and lightened wall sections. The customer needed a clean prototype-to-production process with repeatable assembly behavior.

Manufacturing Process
The blank was rough machined with balanced stock removal, then semi-finished to stabilize the box structure. Final boring and counterboring were completed from the functional datums. The fixture supported thin walls and kept the motor face square to the bearing line.
Deburring was controlled around bearing seats and threaded holes so no sharp edge could interfere with assembly or cleaning.

Inspection And Result
CMM inspection confirmed bore position, face flatness and pocket depth. Gauge pins checked dowel holes, and bearing fit checks confirmed the final seating condition. The finished housings met assembly requirements and were packed for clean medical device production.

FAQ
What was the product in this case study?
The product was a CNC machined 6061-T6 aluminum gearbox housing for a medical syringe pump drive module.
Which features required the most control?
Bearing bores, motor mounting face, lead screw support pocket, dowel holes, counterbores and thin wall ribs required the most control.
Why was staged machining used?
Staged roughing, semi-finishing and final boring reduced stress movement and protected bore alignment.
How was the part inspected?
CMM checks, gauge pins, bearing fit checks, dial indicator checks and visual deburring review were used.
Can the design be customized?
Yes. Motor pattern, bearing size, lead screw position, sensor window and anodizing requirements can be adjusted.
How were parts delivered?
Parts were cleaned, separated with foam, protected in clear pouches and shipped with batch and inspection identification.
