Representative application

This case describes a representative 6061-T6 housing for a medical equipment control module. The part includes an electronics pocket, PCB mounting bosses, connector windows, a cover interface, gasket groove and cosmetic exterior surfaces. It is a manufacturing example rather than a claim about a certified device. The equipment manufacturer owns electrical safety, EMC, software, user interface and final validation; the machining supplier controls material, CNC process, finishing coordination, inspection and delivery records.

Released package review

The controlled package includes a 2D drawing, matching 3D model, revision history, material grade, finish specification, masking map and critical-characteristic list. Before quoting, the shop reviews wall thickness, cutter reach, burr-removal access, thread depth, connector window position, cover land flatness and whether dimensions apply before or after anodizing. Missing gasket, connector or masking information is clarified before first-article planning.

Material and blank preparation

Certified 6061-T6 stock is selected with enough allowance for stable roughing and final cleanup. Material identity remains linked to the traveler from cutting through shipment. The blank is supported to avoid distortion around thin walls and large pockets. Roughing removes internal material in balanced stages while leaving stock on bosses, cover lands, connector windows and cosmetic exterior faces for finishing.

CNC machining sequence

The first setup establishes primary datums and roughs the main electronics cavity. Later operations finish PCB bosses, connector windows, threaded holes, gasket groove and cover interface from controlled coordinates. Tool-life limits are important because small cutters can change groove width or leave burrs at connector edges. The housing is checked after unclamping so spring-back is visible before finishing.

Anodizing and masking

If anodizing is required, the masking plan protects conductive contact surfaces, threads or tight fits as defined by the drawing. Coating thickness allowance is reviewed with groove and connector dimensions. After finishing, the housing is rechecked for functional dimensions, visible coating buildup, color consistency and damage at seal lands. Finish lot information remains tied to material and machining records.

Inspection package

A first-article package can include material certificates, dimensional report, boss height, connector window position, gasket groove results, cover land flatness, thread checks, finish records and representative photos. Optical measurement may be used for small windows and grooves, while CMM or fixtures confirm datum relationships. The inspection method should match the released drawing and assembly requirements.

Cleaning and packaging

Each housing is cleaned to remove coolant, chips, anodizing residue and loose particles from pockets, threaded holes and grooves. Parts are separated in trays or protective bags so cosmetic faces, gasket lands and contact surfaces cannot rub. Labels identify part number, revision, material lot, finish lot and inspection status. Packaging is clean and protective but not described as sterile unless specified by a validated process.

Repeat production controls

For repeat batches, the controlled process includes CNC program, fixture, tool-life rules, deburring method, anodizing route, inspection plan, cleaning process and packaging specification. Trend checks on boss height, connector position, groove depth and cover flatness can reveal drift before assembly yield drops. Changes to board layout, connector supplier, gasket design or finish trigger a documented review.

Customer handoff

The handoff defines approved first-article results, batch quantity, required certificates, inspection format, cosmetic criteria and any customer-supplied assembly or environmental test. A stable forecast helps reserve matching material and finishing capacity. A complete revision package prevents obsolete connector windows or PCB boss locations from reaching production.

FAQ

Is this a certified medical control module?

It is a representative machining case. Device certification, electrical safety and system validation remain with the equipment manufacturer.

Why use 6061-T6 aluminum?

It offers useful machinability, weight and anodizing behavior, but the final alloy and finish must be approved by the device designer.

Which features drive assembly?

PCB boss height, connector window location, threaded holes, cover land flatness, gasket groove geometry and EMI contact areas commonly drive fit.

Can anodizing affect the housing?

Yes. Coating can alter grooves, threads and tight fits, so masking, allowance and post-finish inspection are planned.

How are cosmetic surfaces protected?

Parts are separated after finishing and packed so visible faces, seal lands and connector edges cannot rub.

What records can accompany the housing?

Material certificates, first-article report, dimensional data, finish records, traceability and agreed inspection photos can be supplied.
